about
Silver Liz, the Brooklyn-based husband/wife duo of Carrie and Matt Wagner, is unafraid to explore entirely disparate genres. After releasing their first album in 2017 filled with shoegaze and dreampop indebted to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, they recently released two dance tracks, both of which climbed to #1 on Hype Machine and received praise from sites such as HighClouds and Indie Shuffle. Performances of these dance tracks also earned them a victory in a VR Battle of The Bands hosted by George Clanton & Neggy Gemmy’s 100% Electronica label in March 2021.
The duo takes their genre-traversing tendencies even further on their second full-length album, which they’re aiming to release in the spring of 2022.
This latest single, “Until Lately”, is the opening track off the new album. Those familiar with Silver Liz’s recent output will be immediately jarred by the song’s stripped-down first verse of just acoustic guitar and Carrie’s soft singing. However, the song soon evolves into a dreamy wall-of-sound characteristic of many Silver Liz songs; but this time, there is no electric guitar. The song coalesces into a complex arrangement of Aphex Twin-inspired analog synth lines, drums that sound like they’re from a 1960’s Phil Spector recording, baroque piano flourishes, and an accordion they rediscovered in their bedroom studio closet, which belonged to Matt’s late grandfather.
“I remember playing the song for Matt for the first time. He… hated it,” Carrie recalls. “It was very earnest compared to more cryptic lyrics I had written in the past. While the lyrics aren’t completely based on my personal experience, I heightened the feelings of jealousy I sometimes had as a kid and that I still experience. When I would introduce myself to people just a few years ago, I felt weird putting out into the world that making music was what I wanted to do, because in a few of my social circles that was confusing to people. Thankfully my insecurities around that have subsided more and more over the years, and the song alludes to that.”
The video for “Until Lately” was shot on Matt’s iPhone in one take in Central Park, New York City. “I wanted to try making a video like ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay, but in Central Park. It’s shot in slow-motion, so it gives the viewer time to potentially fixate on the entertaining microcosms of people we pass by in the busy park” says Matt. “You notice something new each time you watch it”, adds Carrie.
